Do you have Boys with Natural Hair?

“BOY: A noun with dirt on it.”  The first time I saw this quote I laughed! It is the most accurate saying EVER. I have two boys. They are as handsome as can be. They also have natural hair.

I grew up with 8 brothers and 5 sisters. It wasn’t normal for boys to have a lot of hair, especially in my family. For the girls, my Mama had a designated “hair day” which was typically Saturday evening or Sunday after church. When it came to my brother’s hair, they would go to the local hair school for a cut, or a family member would line them up with a low fade. I never grew up seeing them actually do anything besides brush their hair.

Fast forward to today. I now have two sons who both have natural hair. Our oldest still goes to the barbershop with Daddy every two weeks. He rocks a Mohawk fade. My middle has a full head of coils. I’ve learned a few things over the years. When your boys have natural hair, it is work.  It doesn’t need to be styled more often and I’m not constantly buying products. The maintenance side is actually pretty simple. I moisturize with water daily then follow up with a butter or pomade. I use a sponge to style my oldest. Just three easy steps.

The reason their hair is work is because they are always DIRTY! Whether it’s playing in the sand (which is the worst), wrestling in the grass or going to swim lessons. It is in the aftermath of these events that I wish they were bald. Alas I still LOVE their natural crowns! It gives them a unique style and it’s a part of who they are.  I wouldn’t change it for the world. I want my sons to be proud of their natural kinks and coils just as I want my daughter to love her hair.

Do you have kids with naturally curly hair? What product(s) do you use? How do you let them have fun and keep their hair clean and healthy?

XOXO
