There is a lot of focus placed on the health of our hair. The health of the scalp is less frequently discussed, but equally as important. The scalp is the foundation of hair growth and health so let’s talk about our scalps and how to help them flourish!
What are the signs of an unhealthy scalp?
When our scalp health is less than optimal, we can see a number of signs and symptoms that may come in the form of itchiness, pain, flakes or even hair loss.
Itchy scalp (scalp pruritus) with or without dandruff and flakes
An itchy scalp is annoying and uncomfortable. It is often the first sign that the scalp is in need of some attention. The scalp has become inflamed, red and irritated. There may be yellow or whitish flakes. A healthy scalp is not itchy or flaky.
Pain and scalp tenderness.
Pain, tenderness or scalp inflammation is another scalp concern. It is important to decipher whether the cause of the pain is from overly tight styles, inflammation or immune system disruptions such as alopecia or psoriasis. Alopecia and psoriasis require the treatment advice of your doctor.
Hair loss or thinning
One of the most concerning scalp health indicators is hair loss or thinning. Thinning typically occurs around the edges or crown. A scalp with product buildup and inflammation can lead to hair loss as does excessively tight braids and styles. Both irritate and damage the follicles resulting in hair loss.
Fact: Did you know stress related hair loss may not show up for months after the stressful event?
How to improve scalp health?
Improving scalp health is a daily process that yields long term benefits! Here’s what we suggest you do to improve your scalp health.
- Daily massages: Massaging your scalp daily with your hands or a hand held massager like ours (check it out) is an excellent way to improve your scalp heath. Scalp massage increases blood flow and circulation, improves sebum production and distribution. And it feels amazing!
- Steaming your Scalp: Scalp steaming opens up the pores on the scalp- detoxing the scalp by removing product buildup and excess sebum. Additionally steam improves scalp circulation which improves hair growth. While you are at it, steam your hair to open the hair cuticle to allow maximum moisture to penetrate the strands! Adding a steamer for hair into your hair care routine can do wonders for natural, curly hair. You can learn more about hair steaming here and shop our hair steamer here. (Publications like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar all rave about our steamer!)
- Quality conditioners that leave minimal residue: Use conditioners that rinse easily from your hair and scalp- minimizing product buildup. Incorporate conditioners and masks that have skin friendly ingredients. Conditioners like our Moisture Masque which has Squalene and Aloe Vera are perfect for dry scalps that need extra hydration.
- Avoid tight hairstyles: Tight hairstyles can irritate and hurt the scalp. Avoiding overly- tight styles is key for improving your scalp health and diminishing hair loss and breakage. If you wear styles like braids ensure that they are not pulling especially around weaker areas like the edges and nape of the hair.
